RFT readers ranked the U City eateries the best in St. Louis for these Mexican dishes.
Craving Mexican food? There’s no shortage of options in U City, but two reign supreme. RFT readers chose Mi Ranchito as the St. Louis area’s favorite place for both burritos and salsa, the publication revealed in its Restaurants 2013 guide. “If you can pull yourself away from the killer margs or colorful murals long enough to focus on the menu at Mi Ranchito, head straight for the burritos,” RFT advises. Runners up include Chimichanga’s Mexican Restaurant, Torillaria, El Maguey and Pueblo Solis. The restaurant’s variety of salsas pulled it past Tortillaria, Pueblo Solis, Hacienda and Chava’s Mexican Restaurant to be called the ‘best.’ Their margaritas ranked third. The guacamole at Pueblo Solis did manage to keep Mi Ranchito’s in second. …

The U City eatery was named in several readers’ favorite categories.
Riverfront Times readers say Frida's Deli in University City is their favorite place for its vegetarian selection and wraps, the publication revealed in its Restaurants 2013 guide. (Local Harvest, which just opened a second location in Kirkwood, beat out Frida’s for Favorite Vegetarian in the lunch category.) Readers also rated the restaurant among the top five in a handful of other categories: fourth Favorite New Restaurant and Lunch Selection, and fifth Favorite Catering and Salads. The deli is soon poised for even more popularity—owner Natasha Kwan announced an expansion in March, complete with 'Frida's Farm' garden. Riverfront Times readers rated the Soulard pizza spot above U City's La Pizza in both thick and thin crust categories. Do you demand a recount?
RFT readers chose La Pizza as one of the St. Louis area's best pizza makers, the publication revealed in its Restaurants 2013 guide. The U City restaurant ranked in the top five for Favorite Thick Crust and Thin Crust pizzas, placing third and second, respectively. Why didn't it place any higher? Blame Joanie's Pizza, with spaces in Soulard and Oakville. While Tower Grove’s Blackthorn Pub took the prize for Favorite Thick Crust, Joanie’s was named the Favorite Thin Crust and second Favorite Thick Crust. Rankings were determined by reader votes, according to RFT. Both La Pizza and Joanie's offer several sandwich and salad options (not to mention awesome lunch specials). Do you think La Pizza should have ranked above the rest? Who makes …

Feign your surprise, folks: RFT readers chose Cheese-ology, 6602 Delmar Blvd. in University City, as the St. Louis area's favorite place for mac and cheese, the publication revealed in its Restaurants 2013 guide. “Even with a seemingly narrow focus on cheesy noodles, the menu’s interpretations of this comfort food favorite are broad,” according to RFT. “Besides the ‘Classic’ (with American and cheddar), there are mac & cheeses packed with bacon (the ‘Bacon Bacon,’ naturally), spike with hot sauce (the ‘Buffalo Chicken’) and studded with tender steak (the ‘Philly Cheese’).” They also got a nod for their meat-free and vegan options. The Delmar shop represented Missouri on the list.
CNN Travel recently released a list of the nation's best indie book stores, and the only Missouri shop named is right here on the Delmar Loop. The list honors 'brick and mortar' spaces that are surviving the age of digital reading, selected by a writer with three book tours under her belt. "When Subterranean opened in 2000, it carried a mix of new and secondhand books; since then, it's shifted its focus to carrying only new books. But they don't try to stock everything. Instead, they've carved out a niche with cult-classic novels, intriguing offerings from small presses, and books about film, pop culture and history," Hilary Davidson writes. Can you believe the store once considered closing? Read more about Subterranean on Patch: Loop …

New Medicare database shows how hospitals across serving the region — and the rest of the nation — compare for care. Would the wait times for area emergency rooms surprise you?

The Marketplace Fairness Act was approved in the U.S. Senate, and is headed for the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives. The bill would require merchants to collect sales taxes on online purchases.
It's called the "Marketplace Fairness Act" and supporters say it levels the playing field between online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores by requiring online merchants to pay sales taxes to the states, counties and localities where they have done business. Opponents include anti-tax activists and retailers who say it will be overly burdensome—in fact, nearly impossible, they say, to keep track of the tax rates and tax requirements for the myriad of taxing agencies where they may be doing business. The Marketplace Fairness Act passed the U.S. Senate 69-27 on Monday. Next up, the legislation goes to the GOP-led House. President Barack Obama has previously said he supports the bill. Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, voted for …
