University City Marks National Night Out

University City hosts its sixth annual city wide National Night Out Against Crime in Heman Park.

On Tuesday evening, University City joined communities all around the country in celebrating National Night Out, an event designed to bring citizens and police together to build community and help prevent crime.

"Given the weather, there's a nice turn out," said City Manager Lehman Walker.

This year University City celebrated its sixth year holding National Night Out as a city-wide event in Heman Park.

"All the different neighborhoods used to have one, and we had a difficult time making it to every one," said Police Chief Charles Adams. "We figured we'd bring everyone to one place and have a gigantic, great time."

Residents enjoyed a petting zoo, barbecue, a presentation by the Buffalo Soldiers, and live entertainment provided by St. Louis Job Corps.

"We've got a great variety- gospel, rap- we've got clean, motivational rap- R&B, instrumentals, guitar, and saxophone. You're going to see a lot of Job Corps talent," said St. Louis Job Corps Student Affairs Coordinator, Robin Foster.

Primarily, though, the evening was a chance for citizens and police officers to meet.

"It's great because you can actually learn who your neighbors are. You can have fellowship, and actually talk to people," said Police Chief Adams.

"The city itself is the best place to work for," said Detective D. Nodari.

"I just like the people," said Captain Ransom.

"I enjoy working in the community and meeting people. I like doing positive things for the city and community. I enjoy making a difference," said Firefighter David James.
