U City Awarded Grant Money for Heman Park Field Renovations

University City was recently awarded $79,198 in grant money from the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County for Heman Park field renovations.

The money will be used to rehab distressed turf on some athletic fields at Heman Park, and also to install a new irrigation system.

The Commission awarded more than $3 million in park improvement grants to 18 municipalities in St. Louis County.

According to the commission's website, the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County was formed in 2000 after voters approved a new sales tax to help improve, restore and expand their municipal parks and recreation programs.

Other projects slated to receive funding include:

• Clayton - $232,000: Shaw Park Tennis Court Renovation. Clayton will be replacing the 10 tennis court surfaces in Shaw Park with post tension concrete.
• Webster Groves - $256,357: Lockwood Park Walking Trail. Webster Groves will be constructing a 1,500 foot trail at Lockwood Park. The trail will include 2 stone bridges and an outdoor classroom with seating, a pergola, and a fire pit.
• Chesterfield - $90,000: Family Aquatic Center Spray Ground Expansion. The existing spray-ground is being renovated and expanded to 4,860 sqft. There will be 12 total spray features.
• Florissant - $282,271: Tower Court Park Renovations. Florissant is using the funds to mark assorted needed improvements to Tower Court Park including new restrooms, new fencing, repairs to the synthetic turf courts, and a new shelter.
