Richmond Heights resident Stacey Newman won election Monday night as 87th District Missouri state representative after a rematch with Rep. Susan Carlson (D-University City), unofficial returns from the Missouri Secretary of State's website show.

Newman, who could not immediately be reached for comment, captured roughly 51 percent of the vote (1,861 total votes), while Carlson captured just under 49 percent (1,766 total votes).

"We lost tonight," Carlson tweeted after 8:30 p.m. "So proud of my team, supporters and volunteers, we couldn't have done this without you."

The special election happened because incorrect ballots got handed out in the August primary.

Earlier in the day, supporters used Facebook and Twitter to encourage friends to vote for one candidate or the other. Newman chided her opponent in a tweet.

"My opponent is endorsed by David Stokes, GOP committeeman who works w Rex Sinquefield," Newman tweeted shortly before noon. "Another GREAT reason to vote today for Rep. Newman."

Carlson encouraged her Twitter followers to vote throughout the day.

"No matter how this race turns out, I'm proud that we ran a fact-based, issue oriented campaign free of personal attacks," Carlson tweeted after polls closed.
