Sidewalk, Curb Improvements Coming to University City

The City Council has approved a program of repairing and improving sidewalks and curbs around U City.

One of the area's most walkable cities will soon have even better sidewalks to use. The crumbling sidewalks and curbs around University City are scheduled for improvement and replacement.

The University City City Council approved a bid to fix sidewalks around the city. The city awarded at $304,015.25 bid to R. V. Wagner for the work.

R.V. Wagner's original bid of $222,472.50 was lowered than anticipated, so a change order of $81,542.75 was added for additional curb ramps, sidewalks and curbs.

The city inspects all of its sidewalks and curbs every two years.

University City replaces sidewalks that are extensively cracked, failed, faulted and/or poses trip hazards. Curbs are replaced when the damage is severe enough to disrupt drainage or when they have deteriorated and are adjacent to street pavement that is being resurfaced.

Public Works and Parks Director Rich Wilson told the city council Aug. 27 that his department had prioritized the projects on the basis of need.

"We're going to work on the areas that need it the most," he said.

The City is also upgrading curb ramps on streets planned to be resurfaced in the upcoming fiscal years to bring these streets into Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.

I would suggest redoing the short sidewalk (the one they just put in about a year ago) behind Fitz's that leads to and from the parking lot. It wasn't graded (or they didn't't do a very good job) and as a result, when it rains, there are large puddles that leave it impassable. Silly waste of money.
