Patch Picks: Events, Happenings June 11-17

Here's what's happening in and near Ladue, Clayton and University City this week.

 

University City Patch teams up with neighboring Patch sites each week to round up events and happenings in the area. Here are our picks for this week.

  • Are you a purist when it comes to photography? If you love the idea of developing real film in a real darkroom, you won’t want to miss the Basic Darkroom Photography class at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild that begins on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The class meets every Tuesday through The second week in August. The cost is for those ages 18 and over, and costs $150 for non-members and $120 for members, plus a $10 material fee.   • The University City Municipal Commission on Arts & Letters will meet on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
  • Teens in grades 6 to 12 can tie-dye their own t-shirts on Tuesday at the St. Louis County Library Headquarters from 7 to 9 pm. For additional information and to register, visit the library’s website.

Thursday, June 14—Flag Day

  • Want a Taste of U City? You can taste food and drink from more than 30 local businesses on Thursday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the 560 Music Center in University City. Tickets are $15 per person, or $25 for two people if you purchase in advance. Visit the University City Chamber of Commerce’s website for additional information and to purchase tickets.
  • The University City Green Practices Commission will meet on Thursday at 6:30. There’s also an informational meeting on the Loop Media Hub Feasibility Study on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre at the Center of Creative Arts (COCA).
  • The City of Clayton is participating in the St. Louis Cardinals American Red Cross World Series Blood Drive on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at The Center of Clayton. Everyone who tries to donate will receive a t-shirt while supplies last. For more information, visit the city’s website.
  • The St. Louis County Library Headquarters is offering a comic and manga drawing class for teens in grades 6 to 12 on Thursday. Learn more and register at the library’s website.

  • Jimmy’s Café on the Park in Clayton will feature the band Cashmere on Saturday at 8 p.m.
  • Northwest Coffee Company in Clayton is featuring an exhibit from artist Craig Downs. His June Bug exhibit features a number of paintings in his unique style. The exhibit will remain open until July 15.
  • If you’re a Marianne Williamson fan, you’ll be interested in knowing that she’ll be in University City on Saturday at Namaste India, which has teamed up with Yoga & Spa magazine to make it happen. The eent will benefit Room to Read, a charity that helps educate children in underprivileged areas.   • Looking for a good book? Check out the Annual Used Book Fair at the Ethical Society of St. Louis on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as on Sunday. You’ll find bargains on books, DVDs, CDs and more—and if you show up at 8 a.m., you’ll get early-bird discounts. Visit the Ethical Society’s website for additional information.
  • St. Louis County is sponsoring a Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events at South County Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit the county’s website  for additional information.
  • The Clayton Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Straub’s at 8282 Forsyth.

Sunday, June 17—Father’s Day

  • The St. Louis Artists’ Guild presents the Ann Metzger Memorial National All Media Exhibition. The exhibit is free and open to the public. It will open on Sunday at 1 p.m. and will run through Saturday, Aug. 11. For more information, visit the Guild’s website.
  • The University City Public Library will be closed on Sunday in observance of Father’s Day.
