Library Board Selects New President; Bans Patron; Wants to Repave Parking Lot
The library has banned a patron for violating its no-smoking policy and for repeatedly sleeping in the library.
The University City Public Library Board has a new president and a new board member.
Larry Nolan's nomination was approved at the May meeting of the Library Board. On Wednesday, he led his first meeting as board president. T. Serena Jones was welcomed as the newest Library Board member on Wednesday. She was nominated by Councilmember Arthur Sharpe Jr.
In other library news:
- The library will host a Red Cross Blood Drive on Wednesday, July 20 starting at 10:00am. Last year, 17 donors turned out. The library is hoping to exceed that goal this year.
- Library Director Patrick Wall said the library banned a patron from using the library for at least one year, for violating its no-smoking policy and or repeatedly sleeping in the library. Another patron informed library staff that the man was smoking crack cocaine in the men's room. The incident happened in April. The witness was unwilling to file a police report. Wall said a U City police officer indicated that little could be done legally because the witness did not file a police report.
- Wall said the library parking lot needs to be redone. He said estimates range from $3,000 to $5,000 for patching, re-sealing and re-striping the lot. The parking lot was last redone in 2008.
- Wall also announced that this year's Memorial Day Run raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000. The money will benefit the library, The Green Center, U. City in Bloom and the University City Children's Center. Wall said more than 1,700 people registered for the run.

Wow, lucky guy that he just got banned from the library instead of arrested.

Instead of just re-doing the lot, we need to add more parking spaces. Can we get an estimate for that? Revising the landscaping could yield perhaps 8 more spaces (parallel parking against the building itself). Fire hazard? Please, let's check it out.
