Eating My Way Through University City: Winslow's Home

University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest dining experience at Winslow's Home in University City.

Walk into Winslow’s Home at 7213 Delmar Blvd. and prepare to be dazzled. The setting is not familiar to 2011 America. Most people’s “general store” experience stops at the Cracker Barrel alongside the highway. Winslow’s Home, however, is a true gem in University City.

Part general store, part grocery store and part restaurant, Winslow’s Home is not just a place to stop in for a quick bite to eat, it’s a place to experience. Based on the booming success it has had since opening a few years ago, it seems the  University City residents fully support the Winslow’s Home experience.

The uniqueness of this place on the busy corner of Delmar and Midland boulevards is appealing—with everything from quirky gifts to fresh produce from Winslow Farm in Augusta to a closet-sized room full of wine, nearly everyone is bound to find something that suits them!

The store and restaurant is rather crowded, with small tables haphazardly placed amongst the shelves full of knickknacks, books and kitchen tools. Outdoors, a patio filled with tables and chairs welcomes visitors (and their dogs) who prefer a less claustrophobic meal setting. Despite the changing seasons, the patio was packed on a recent visit, proving not much can get in the way between the regulars and a good meal.

Winslow’s Home doesn’t just offer a lot of random products, it also has an abundance of food options. Open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday, dinner Tuesday through Saturday and closed on Mondays, you’re bound to find a time that meets your schedule. Having stopped in a few different times for coffee and a breakfast pastry, my husband and I took advantage of a Friday afternoon and stopped in for lunch.

The place was bustling, with few open tables and a line several parties deep waiting to order food. Orders are placed at the counter and food is then brought to customers at their self-chosen table. Our food took at least 15 minutes to arrive, but with a setting as vivid and abundant as Winslow’s Home, the minutes passed in the blink of an eye.

Our food was set before us, and we dug in. For me, it was the butternut squash soup—per the recommendation of the woman who took my order—and the simple green salad. For my husband, it was the pulled pork sandwich, which came with a side salad and homemade pickles.

After one bite of my soup, I was ready to rush the counter girl and thank her for her brilliant suggestion. The soup was thick and creamy, an accomplishment considering it didn’t have an ounce of dairy in it. My salad, though merely a simple plate of greens, apples and a light vinaigrette, was delightful, the greens significantly fresher than what you buy in the store. My husband’s pulled pork was on par with the rest of the meal—lean meat literally dripping with juices and the perfect match for the homemade brioche it sat on. For dessert, we split a goat cheese cookie, our first ever. Both of us were pleased with the tangy treat topped with a lemon glaze.

Don’t hesitate to stop in at Winslow’s for a bite to eat. Everything on the menu, from the rolled omelet to the fried chicken (available on Tuesday nights only), sounds alluring. Made with fresh, local ingredients, you can enjoy a top-notch meal while supporting a truly local restaurant right in the heart of University City!
