Eating My Way Through University City: Snarf’s Sub Shop

Natalie McLaury cooks and writes a food and recipe blog called The Sweets Life

When I saw Snarf’s Sub Shop put up their “Opening Soon!” sign, several months ago, I immediately went online to see what I could find out about it. I was surprised to find it was actually a Boulder, Colorado-based eatery that has now opened a few locations outside of Colorado, including St. Louis. Since the shop opened, I’ve had intentions of checking it out, but it wasn’t until a recent Groupon purchase that I finally made my way into the Loop to see what Snarf’s had to offer.

Rather than give you a traditional play-by-play, I’m going to change it up from my usual restaurant review post and give you the Top 10 Reasons I think you, too, should make your way to Snarf’s.

In no particular order, my reasons are…

  1. Snarf’s has outdoor seating. With temperatures finally starting to rise in St. Louis, I am always looking for opportunities to dine al fresco. Doing so in the Loop gives you the chance to people-watch while enjoying your meal—win-win! (And for those of you who prefer to eat indoors, there is plenty of seating inside, both at traditional tables and counters with barstools.)
  2. Snarf’s loads up the sandwiches with the good stuff. I was impressed by how jam-packed with filling my sandwich was. This was no wimpy meal and I had the messy table to prove it!
  3. Snarf’s provides great beverage options. If you’re wanting more than your standard fountain drink, you’ve come to the right place. With several options of beer, milkshakes, and sparkling sodas, you’ll skip right over the Pepsi and Sprite!
  4. Snarf’s price is right. Sandwiches range from $5.50-$11.25, depending on size (additional charges for certain toppings) which is slightly higher than the usual chains, but you absolutely get your money’s worth (See #2!).
  5. Snarf’s makes and sells their own hot peppers. These peppers were the highlight of my sandwich, adding a juicy kick to every bite!
  6. Snarf’s serves dessert! For those of you who must end every meal with something sweet, look no further. Snarf’s offers a variety of treats (including mini cookies for fifty cents apiece) along with the aforementioned milkshakes.
  7. Snarf’s has customer service down. My sandwich was supposed to come with sprouts but they forgot to put them on. When I informed an employee (halfway through eating my sandwich no less), he immediately handed me a giant handful of sprouts.
  8. Snarf’s sandwiches arrive warm! Yes, this means a little bit of an extra wait, but I’m a firm believer that a warm sandwich with melty cheese beats out standard cold cuts every time.
  9. Snarf’s menu is easily customized. The menu clearly states which orders are vegetarian, and there are plenty of options for adding or removing items, many with no additional charge. Extra points for atypical ingredients like fresh avocado and portabello mushrooms! Not craving a sandwich? They also offer a few daily soups as well as a handful of salads.
  10.  Snarf’s name is fun to say. Snarf’s. Snarf’s Sub Shop. Admit it, you enjoy hearing the words roll off your tongue!

So there you have it, ten reasons to hop on over to Snarf’s next time you’re craving a sub sandwich!
