Eating My Way Through University City: Market Pub House

Natalie McLaury cooks and writes a food and recipe blog called The Sweets Life.

My husband Ryan loves to tell stories of when he was growing up and his family would get to go to Taco Bell for dinner out. He recalls the fact that the total bill for their family of five was usually about $10. In his mind, $10 was the cost of a night out to dinner.

Times have clearly changed, and it’s rare that you can feed a party of one for $10. In a world of rising restaurant prices, even at a fast food joint, Market Pub House (6655 Delmar Blvd.) has arrived on the scene with a menu featuring nothing greater than $7. Their claim to fame is that all entrees are $5, $6, or $7, making this an affordable dinner spot, even for a family of five!

Ryan and I recently spent a Sunday evening on their patio. Though the interior of the restaurant is large, complete with a spacious bar and ample TVs, we couldn’t resist one of the first warm nights St. Louis has seen this year. We spent several minutes perusing their extremely large menu. Market Pub House primarily serves standard American food—wings, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and a host of sides and appetizers.

While making our dinner selection, we noticed the number of specials throughout the week at Market Pub House. As if daily low prices weren’t enough, they also have daily happy hours (evening and late night) as well as $1 burgers on Mondays, karaoke with drink specials on Tuesdays, and 40 cent wings on Wednesdays. For a complete line up, check out their schedule here.

Apparently we were both in a Greek mood, as Ryan opted for the Greek turkey burger (all burgers have the option of beef, turkey, chicken, veggie, or portabella mushroom at no extra cost) and I ordered the Greek wrap with a side of fresh vegetables.

Our thoughts on the food? Though neither of our meals would be considered outstanding, they were decent enough…especially for the price. The food was tasty and well-prepared, hitting the spot on a night I wasn’t up to cooking.

My biggest complaint with Market Pub House was the rather slow service. The restaurant was relatively busy but they had plenty of servers buzzing around the patio and yet we found ourselves waiting an abnormally long time for our order to be taken, our food to be delivered, and our check to arrive.

I would definitely return to Market Pub House, particularly to try their $1 burgers on a Monday. Furthermore, their drink menu sounded both interesting and affordable. When you’re looking for somewhere to dine with a group, Market Pub House is a great option—the food is cheap, the menu is sure to please everyone, and the outdoor seating area is excellent for dining al fresco and enjoying the sights and sounds of the Loop.
