Eating My Way Through University City: La Pizza

Natalie McLaury cooks and writes a food and recipe blog called The Sweets Life.

is so non-descript, I’m willing to bet you may not even notice that it exists on the corner of Delmar and Old Bonhomme.

However, the little restaurant made big waves in 2009 when it was awarded Best Pizza by St. Louis Magazine, beating out both and Pi, two pizza places well-loved by St. Louisans. Though both of the aforementioned will receive their own reviews in due time, today I want to focus on La Pizza.

Because the restaurant space itself is so small, with nothing more than a few tables on the other side of the counter and ovens, I opted for takeout. After placing my order by telephone (14-inch with spinach, mushrooms, tomato, and sausage on half), I arrived twenty minutes later as requested. On the counter was a case filled with a few calzones, though I’m hoping they weren’t for sale, as they had clearly been sitting out for quite a while. Though the menu mentioned calzones, I was there for the award-winning pizza! That being said, I was impressed by their size and am curious to try one next time…as well as the heroes also mentioned on the menu.

The two employees behind the counter were friendly and worked efficiently to ring me up and get me on my way, paper plates and napkins in tow. My husband and I headed home, him speeding just a bit, us both breathing in the fantastic smell of hot pizza.

Their smallest pizza, the 14-inch, was impressive in size, with eight large slices. I was pleased to find that La Pizza did not skimp on the toppings, our pizza was covered as ordered and without an excess of grease. La Pizza’s pies are New York style, with a medium thick crust and slices bigger than your hand. I liked the weight of the crust, doughy and substantial without being heavy. The sauce is on the sweet side, which earns no complaints from me. I am pretty sure the spinach atop the pizza was not fresh, but the abundance of toppings made up for it.

My biggest regret was not eating it hot from the oven. No matter how good a slice is, you can’t beat biting in right after it was cooked. Next time we’ll order in and take in the ‘mom and pop’ atmosphere. Would I call it the best pizza in St. Louis? Time will tell. I can assure you that if you’re looking for quality pizza at a decent price in a short amount of time, La Pizza is your place!
