Students at Delmar-Harvard Elementary School stepped up to the challenge of collecting shoes for charity.

The box says 'Share A Pair' and that's exactly what the students did, bringing in nearly 500 pairs of shoes.

Boxes and bags in the hallway in front of the principal's office overflowed with shoes; pink snow boots, red Crocs and a pair of red, white and blue slippers teetered on top of the mound of shoes.

Principal Nicalee Stephens said the goal was for the St. Louis community  to collect 20,010 pairs of shoes in 2010.

"Our students did a fantastic job," said Stephens.

The shoes will go to MERS-Goodwill to help fund its mission of assisting local people to find work and live more independently.
