Big Turnout For University City Alumni Picnic
Several hundred UCHS alum gathered at Heman Park for Saturday's alumni picnic.
Montrella Holbrook-Rhodes (1989) came all the way from Atlanta for Saturday's get together. "Love it. Wonderful time. I get a chance to see everybody."
"I can't remember names, but the faces are the same," said Holbrook-Rhodes. She keeps in touch with many of her classmates online but said seeing them in person is great.
"I've been coming every year since they had it, said Danny Walker (1989). "It's getting bigger and bigger every year." Walker said it's fun to reconnect with his classmates. "It's good to see everybody's faces and everybody's got older ands look grayer and looks bigger, and some a little smaller."
"Nokie" (1983) and Ken Yency (1982) were neighbors growing up and are still close friends.
"I love it," said Yency of the annual alumni picnic. "It's great to see everybody. Some of the folks you haven't seen in 30 or 40 years."
"Especially trying to guess the people's names ," added Nokie.
The pair were feasting on riblets, hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken wings.
This was Darlene Dye's (1984) first time at the alumni picnic. "It's really nice. You can see a lot of people that you have't seen in year." She said everyone looks pretty much the same. Although she laughingly added, "you know how age is."
"I'm enjoying this. There's nothing like this. I feel like I'm in heaven right now," said Levy Smith (1985).
Gary Boyd (1982) who helped organize the picnic called Saturday's turnout, "awesome."
